Ant species good for beginners

In this category you will find ant species that are ideal for beginner breeders due to their characteristics. These include Lasius niger (black ant) and Messor barbarus (harvester ant) or Camponotus nicobarensis, which are renowned for their ease of breeding and resistance to different environmental conditions.

The easiest ant species to start with is Messor barbarus. Care of this species is limited to replenishing seeds and water once every 2–3 weeks. This ant also does not require overwintering, which is an added convenience.

Camponotus nicobarensis, on the other hand, is a species that we feed as early as 2 weeks, but its rapid development means that we see changes in feeding patterns almost immediately. These ants also have no specific nesting requirements. They can be reared, practically, in any type of formicarium.

Lasius niger, is an ant from our native garden. They require overwintering, while they are resistant to practically any breeder error. They will eat everything they get and will return the favour with a rapid growth of offspring.

Why start with beginner ants?

Beginner ants have been chosen for their ease of care and minimal need for intervention, making them an excellent choice for people who are just learning about the needs of these amazing creatures. Breeding these species will allow you to gain valuable experience and understanding, which will come in handy if you decide to go for more challenging species in the future.

If you want to make it easier to get started with ant farming, we recommend using our range of ready-made ant kits – you can choose the perfect ant farm for beginners, including all the necessary elements such as a formicarium, food or other accessories.
