Description

Species description Camponotus cruentatus

Camponotus cruentatus, also known as blood ants, are characterised by their impressive size. Queens can reach up to 16mm in length and workers range from 4 to 14mm. Their body has a unique chestnut-black colouration which, combined with their large size, makes them one of the more outstanding species for ant breeding.

Difficulty of breeding Camponotus cruentatus

Camponotus cruentatus is considered a species of low breeding difficulty, making it a great choice for beginners alike. Due to its size and brilliant colouration, it is also a frequent choice of more experienced ant breeders. Their size and calm temperament make them easy to keep and observe at home.

Breeding instructions

To ensure optimal conditions for Camponotus cruentatus, it is recommended to maintain the formicarium at 22-26 degrees Celsius with access to water sources and a variety of food. The diet of these ants should contain sweet liquids (e.g. water with honey) and protein (e.g. dead insects). This will provide them with all the necessary nutrients. From our experience of private home breeding, we can also advise the use of reheating Camponotus cruentatus. This significantly increases the number of eggs laid by the queen.

The first days after purchase

In the first few days after a colony of Camponotus cruentatus arrives in your home, it is important to keep them calm so they can acclimatise to their new environment. Provide the ants with constant access to water and gently introduce food, observing their food preferences. Each colony, subtly differs in its preferences. Some colonies prefer a syrup of water and sugar, while others prefer diluted honey at a ratio of 1 to 2. So check what your colony chooses, or surprise them with each feeding. They will thank you!

Camponotus cruentatus are the ideal choice for those with little experience. We invite you to purchase these unique ants from our shop and join the ranks of satisfied breeders. Don’t miss the opportunity to be part of this amazing adventure – add Camponotus cruentatus to your collection today!
